PILT funds to be distributed to over 1,900 counties.
The Department of the Interior announced its latest round of Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) on Thursday. PILT funds are distributed to local governments which are responsible for areas that contain federal lands. Since local governments cannot tax the federal government, the Interior has distributed funds to help pay for local infrastructure, schools, police, and fire services.
Secretary Haaland expressed the importance of the PILT program saying, “This year’s distribution of $529.3 million to more than 1,900 counties will help local governments carry out vital services, such as firefighting and police protection, construction of public schools and roads, and search-and-rescue operations. Our mission relies on partnerships with U.S. states and territories. These disbursements are a great example of our commitment to be a good neighbor to the communities we serve.”
